Ebook

I would like to know what steps I need to take to create my own ebook for sale. Right now, I am interested in writing fiction. After I’ve finished the story/book, what steps do I need to take, and what are the cost to get it copy-righted, published, and promoted on the internet? What sites would you recommend, that would take me step by step through the process (keep in mind that I’m new to this)? What are the pros and cons to getting my work published in ebook format vs paperback/hardcover format. Please be as detailed with your answer as possible. Thank you

P.S. Are there free, or really inexpensive ways to creating my own ebook for sale?

I’m about to start school as a first time college student and I don’t have a lot of money to spend on books, so I’m trying to decide if going the ebook route is a good idea for me. If any one has experience with this I would love to hear your idea. Thanks!
